Obama is working on reforming education. Obama is working on lower high school dropout percentages, and to continue pursuing their education. Obama's goal is to make the United States' college graduate percentage higher than any other countries.Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Rev. Sharpton and Newt Gingrich are working to help Obama's cause. They're going across the country spreading Obama's idea of Americans who have a higher education can get better jobs. On Sept. 8 Obama is going to give a big speech to the students across the nation to let them know that education is important for them and the country. they want to show that there is no reason to not have an education. These men believe that education is the most important thing right now. agreed that it is, but the students and parents arent the only ones that decide wether or not to continue their education. sometimes there are good excuses like money or family problems. families who have financial problems should be helped first so they can have the option to continue their kids' education. Obama's speech is sure to be inspirational but the question is how many people will listen. Would it change anything? Chances are it wont have a really big impact, but it's a start.

To tackle the drop out percentage I believe that Obama's tactics are good. I agree with you that students that drop out do have economic problems and personal problems but what about those who don't. Probably Obama should help everyone but espacially the ones who are unfortunate. On September 8 for sure I'm going to see the speech he delivers hopefully is inspirational, and hopefully it opens the eyes of those students who don't see the point in education.
ReplyDeleteI agree this is a start, but how are those students that aren't interested in school going to be interested in listening to a speech given by the president about education. President Obama does have away with words but honestly I don't think that those students are informed about political issues. We should talk to Ms. Morales and Ms. Soliman about leting everyone at school listen to the speech. If it's during school hours. Obama has a point school education is one of the biggest issues facing us today specially among low income family's, but i have hope that change will come SOON.
ReplyDeleteI agree with brenda that there are students who are jut not interested in school or anything that is related to it. On the other hand many students do drop out not only out of high school but also out of college because of financial issues especially if their parents are unemployed or are low incomed families. On the other hand though education is really important. With and education people are most likely to get better jobs and with that comes better pay. I also hope that we get to watch Obama's speech at school if it's during school hours so everyone can have a chance to listen and hopefully Obama's words will bring hope to many students who are thinking about dropping out.
ReplyDeleteObama's heart for education will certainly influence many low-income students. Actually Obama himself is very inspirational model for many students with colors. However, I do not know what changes Obama will actually accomplish. Education, especially for low-income student, is quite complex, because it is very much affected by social problems. It is questionable how Obama's administration will attain both educational and social success. Although I do not believe Obama's educational reform will have immediate effects, It is a tremendous beginning that will oneday be accomplished.
ReplyDeletep.s. I agree with brenda; we should watch the speech. Even though it is not on our class hours, we can record it and broadcast in homeroom time.
Very good point about the families and about helping them out the most. There are many people who love Obama and will most likely listen to what he has to say, but still there are many people who won't do anything about it. The problem that I have with this is, to the people who aren't ignorant and already know that education is the way to go, this speech will be old news to them. And will the people who "hate" education follow this at all? Sure, they may listen to his speech but will they act on the thoughts that were proposed?

ReplyDeleteEducation is the backbone of the country’s economy, strongly required to produce a competitive workforce that will help strengthen the US economy that currently finds itself in a crisis. But as the dropout rate continues to rise, Education has become the “civil rights issue of our generation” as previously pointed out by Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education. It is a problem that mustn’t be set aside much longer, in many cases individuals are driven to delay their education because of financial difficulties or personal issues, two uncontrollable factors that are not simply excuses but mere reality. Now Obama’s plan to deliver a speech is a great step, believe it or not I believe it can be inspirational to many, predominantly because he himself embodies the hope and faith we all nourish our goals and dreams with. All because ONE simple thought evoking voice can indeed make a difference, best believe it. But for now let’s just hope that even those who lack interest in their education can be shaken up and awaken the ambitious scholar that lives within everyone. Nonetheless, I must say I agree with Jose it’s not a matter of how many will sit and listen but how many will analyze, digest, and "act on the thoughts proposed" by the President about the issue.
